Westmont rises to bring home GSAC Championship

Four days after his home burned to the ground as a result of the Tea Fire in Montecito, Westmont men’s soccer head coach Dave Wolf watched from the bench as his team won the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship by defeating #5 Azusa Pacific (13-4-3) by a score of 2-0.
Wolf was not the only part of the Warrior team to have suffered a loss as a result of the fire. Senior midfielder Jonathon Schoff and his six roommates loss the home they rented a mile from campus and the dorm room of freshman defender Zach George was consumed by the blaze. Sophomore Ben Gordon, who lived in the same dormitory as George, also suffered damage to his room when it was flooded as a result of fire fighting activity.
“We knew we were playing for more than just ourselves,” said senior goalkeeper Justin Etherton. “We were playing for our school, we were playing for our coach, we were playing for hope in our fans.”

Dons’ CIF run goes back-to-back-to-back
The No. 1-seeded Santa Barbara girls tennis team completed the second leg of a three stage race to the CIF finals by defeating Newport Harbor 11-5 on the Dons’ home courts on Wednesday.
The quarterfinal win means Santa Barbara has to travel to Palm Desert on Thursday for the Div. II semifinal, which will be its third match in as many days after their second-round match with Diamond Bar was postponed from Saturday until Tuesday because of the Southern California wild fires.
“We have a great great group of senior girls here that I know want to end strong and so does everyone else here,” said junior Hanna Grokenberger, who, with partner Kinzie McKeown, led the Dons’ doubles side to eight wins and control of the match. ”Next year we’ll be losing a couple of girls and it will be hard, so, this is the year.”
Dons triumph in matchup of fire-affected teams
After two postponements caused by two devastating fires, Santa Barbara and Diamond Bar were finally able to meet in the CIF Division-II round of 16 on Tuesday, and the Dons girls tennis team cruised to a 15-3 victory to set up a quarterfinal match against Newport Harbor 24 hours later on Wednesday.
The match, originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed to Monday as both coaches and several players from each team were evacuated from their homes over the weekend due to the Tea Fire in Santa Barbara and the Freeway Complex Fire near Diamond Bar. Because evacuation orders were not lifted until Monday in both areas, the match was further delayed to Tuesday to give everyone time to pick up the pieces. [Read more...]
